1945 - 1998

The Dr. Jay Menon, M. D. Memorial Scholarship is setup by Mrs. Shama Menon in loving memory of her husband Dr. Jayshankar Menon to honor and commemorate his life and commitment to education.

Dr. Jay Menon, a renowned orthopedic and hand surgeon on staff at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana, California and an Associate Clinical Professor at Loma Linda University Medical Center, passed away unexpectantly on February 18, 1998 as a result of a heart attack.

Dr. Menon was born in India on October 27, 1945. Dr. Menon completed his medical degree from the Institute of Medical Sciences in Benares, India, and later came to New York where he did his surgical internship and his first year general surgery residency. Dr. Menon completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the combined Johns Hopkins-Sinai Hospital Orthopedic residency program in Maryland in June 1977. He also did a year of fellowship in Hand Surgery at the University of California San Diego.

Dr. Menon had many accomplishments throughout his career. He was published in many of the leading orthopedic and hand surgery journals (Journal of Hand Surgery, Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopedics, and Contemporary Orthopedics, among others) and also wrote chapters for medical textbooks (Technical Tips in Hand Surgery, Hand Surgery: Current Practice, and The Wrist, among others.) Dr. Menon was recognized as an authority on arthritic problems of the wrist. His original inventions, for which he held U.S. patents, include the 'Universal Wrist Prosthesis' and a unique endoscopic technique for carpal tunnel syndrome, known as the 'Carpal Tunnel Release Kit.' He was the first person to do cadaveric joint transplantations in the hand and performed Southern California's first elbow transplant.

In 1994, the San Bernardino County Medical Society honored Dr. Menon's work by presenting him the William L. Cover, M.D. Outstanding contribution to Medicine Award. At Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Menon was awarded the Medical Group Innovation award in 1988, 1990, 1992 and 1994. He also received awards for his surgical teaching videotapes from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Society of Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Menon was an active member in over 22 national and international medical organizations including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, The American Society of Surgery of the Hand, International Microsurgical Society and the California Orthopedic Association.
