The Dr. Jay Menon, M. D.
Memorial Scholarship is setup by Mrs. Shama Menon in loving
memory of her husband Dr. Jayshankar Menon to honor and commemorate his life and commitment to education.
Dr. Jay Menon, a renowned
orthopedic and hand surgeon on staff at the Kaiser Permanente Medical
Center in Fontana, California and an Associate Clinical Professor at
Loma Linda University Medical Center, passed away unexpectantly on
February 18, 1998 as a result of a heart attack.
Dr. Menon was born in India
on October 27, 1945. Dr. Menon completed his medical degree from the
Institute of Medical Sciences in Benares, India, and later came to New
York where he did his surgical internship and his first year general
surgery residency. Dr. Menon completed his residency in Orthopedic
Surgery at the combined Johns Hopkins-Sinai Hospital Orthopedic
residency program in Maryland in June 1977. He also did a year of
fellowship in Hand Surgery at the University of California San Diego.
Dr. Menon had many
accomplishments throughout his career. He was published in many of the
leading orthopedic and hand surgery journals (Journal of Hand Surgery,
Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, Clinical Orthopedics, and Contemporary
Orthopedics, among others) and also wrote chapters for medical textbooks
(Technical Tips in Hand Surgery, Hand Surgery: Current Practice, and The
Wrist, among others.) Dr. Menon was recognized as an authority on
arthritic problems of the wrist. His original inventions, for which he
held U.S. patents, include the 'Universal Wrist Prosthesis' and a unique
endoscopic technique for carpal tunnel syndrome, known as the 'Carpal
Tunnel Release Kit.' He was the first person to do cadaveric joint
transplantations in the hand and performed Southern California's first
elbow transplant.
In 1994, the San Bernardino County Medical Society honored Dr. Menon's
work by presenting him the William L. Cover, M.D. Outstanding
contribution to Medicine Award. At Kaiser Permanente, Dr. Menon was
awarded the Medical Group Innovation award in 1988, 1990, 1992 and 1994.
He also received awards for his surgical teaching videotapes from the
American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and the American Society of
Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Menon was an active member in over 22 national
and international medical organizations including the American Academy
of Orthopedic Surgeons, The American Society of Surgery of the Hand,
International Microsurgical Society and the California Orthopedic
Association.
